Macabeo is believed to be a native to Catalunya, and is one of the three grape varieties found in Cava, where it adds perfume to the blend. It has low to medium acidity and is known in Rioja as Viura, where it is the major white grape variety and responsible for the best vino blancos of the Rioja region.
Macabeo is known for producing wines that are light and crisp with a fresh, fruity character. The flavour and aroma profile consists of green apples, pears, and citrus fruits. Some examples may also have a hint of floral or mineral undertones.
The variety lends itself to extensive ageing, where it can assume the character of dried yellow fruits, yellow pear, dried pineapple, and banana which are classic hallmarks of traditional white Rioja. These combine with a range of savoury herbaceous notes including dill, white tea and oak-derivative cinnamon, cardamom and clove notes. With age the wine becomes highly textural and intense.
