Verdejo

Verdejo

Pronounced: Vurr-day-ho.

Despite the similarity in their names, Verdelho and Verdejo are two very distinct grape varieties. Verdejo is a white wine grape variety that is native to Spain.

In terms of flavour and aroma profile, Verdejo is known for producing wines that are crisp and refreshing with a distinct character of lemon, lime, peach, green apple, and herbal notes of bay leaf. Some examples may also have a hint tropical fruit and citrus flavours such as grapefruit, along with nuttiness and a creamy texture. Often blended with Sauvignon Blanc to produce fresh, lively and fruit forward wines that are some of the best white wines in Spain. Typically, these wines are best consumed young.

In particular, the white wines of DO Rueda offer excellent examples of Verdejo, where they are most often used to produce 100% Verdejo varietals.

Perfect Pairing: Verdejo is a versatile grape that pairs well with a variety of foods, particularly chicken, seafood dishes such as grilled fish or shellfish, and light salads. Its crisp acidity and bright flavours also make it a good match for spicy dishes and Spanish cheeses including Manchego. It is also a popular choice as an aperitif, due to its bright, refreshing nature. A perfect summer wine.

Espetos (grilled sardines) on the beach

Espetos being grilled on the beach pair particularly well with Verdejo.
